That sound you hear is thousands of wangsting sexist fanboys shrieking in horror.
Suck it.

Pelvis? What pelvis?
This is a special Greg Land-specific category. My hatred of the way this man draws pelvises and hips is deep, fiery and eternal. What’s worse is that he deliberately does it, and he has no actual excuse of fucking up the way he does: He traces ALL his shit these days. No, those impossible pelvises are a DELIBERATE choice on his part, and that makes me angrier than words could possibly say.
He inflates the breast sizes and narrows the hips until they’re grotesque mockeries of real women’s anatomy. He calls it “making them more slender and athletic” or some shit, but I call it, “I’m not an ass man so I’m going to do everything I can to emphasise the fact that these chicks have giant tits.”
Here’s an image of an actual slender, athletic woman:
OH HELLO, SON, I THINK I SEE SOME FUCKING HIPS THERE. You can see the point where the top of the femur juts against the flesh. Even in this tiny, lithe little gymnast, the bones remain. You cannot lose bone. Humanity needs the wide bones in that part of the body for procreation, they are in our genetics. So I’m not sure what Mr. Land is trying to do with that excuse, cause it doesn’t go along with reality.
So, my anatomical break-down of a typical Land image and then my correction:
Okay, so, going in to this picture, I thought I’d just have to widen the hips or something. Then I started the anatomical overlay, and I realised there was SO MUCH wrong with this image. I had to actually give up on fixing his image and start again, cause it was SO WRONG. The ribcage is impossibly narrow, and I know that it isn’t the focus of this series of articles, but it’s so egregious and horrible that I have top stop and say: WILL YOU LOOK AT THAT FUCKERY?
So seriously, I had to give up on the sketch-over, because the anatomy points were all, horrendously, terribly WRONG, and start again. I got this:
As you can see, I tried to make her actually look Asian. Ended up looking like Trini from the Power Rangers, but she fucking kicked ass so that’s okay. She’s Asian both sides because, well, I can’t afford to buy comics, so I’ve lost track of what race she is in the purple aerobics instructor kit. I can draw them, and I save up for the really good special runs (Wolverine: Origin) and the indie comics that I like (Platinum Grit) but that’s it. Being a broke artist on a disability pension, I’m sadly unable to indulge my comic thing as much as I’d like.
To the actual anatomy - holy shit, where to start?
- Fixed the hips. They were far too small.
- Gave the thighs some muscle.
- Made the head bigger to match boobs and shoulders.
- Widened the ribcage because HOLY SHIT, YO.
- Added muscle mass here and there.
- Actually drew the costume instead of making it look like body paint.
- Changed her hair cause it was too impractical.
That took way longer than I had anticipated. Sorry about the delay, folks!
Next time: Imperial Walkers.
A brilliant post and a fantastic correction.
Truly, Greg Land loathes hips.
My brother is a fan of the hawkeye initiative.
And while he tried his best to be like Clint, apparently the poses are either impossible for him, or get this, way too painful.
He would like it to be known that he has no ass to work with.
My daughter caught me drawing this and was all “make his bottom bigger. BIGGER.”
I said “but his bottom is already big. I can’t make it any bigger, that would be ridic-“
Then I remembered why I was drawing this.
(I also discovered today that if I spray my paper with hairspray, my pen doesn’t bleed, so all in all, it’s been a great day for art.)
